Best to start with this:

He that answereth a matter before he heareth it, it is folly and shame unto him. Proverbs 18:13

Many today have difficulties with properly defining words and concepts that relate to works and salvation so they tend to leave the obvious abstract components out.

In the realm of salvation abstract works that are rooted in the mind are as much important as physical works and both are required commandments of obedience for all believers.

Example of the abstract is bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). This is very much a work of obedience in the believer's mind and it is required.

By the way, logic is also abstract and sound logic is entirely necessary to see the truth in proper context. Without obedience salvation is not possible and one cannot obey without good works.

Follow the logic here:

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him Hebrews 5:9

If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15

For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:26

But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:6

Think about it, even believing is obedience that is rooted in the mind and this is also a work that is required on our part.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved... Acts 16:31

…If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. Romans 10:9

And then there is repentance…

…Except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Luke 13:3 (and 5)

And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent. Acts 17:30

Best not to miss the logical conclusion here. One must ***DO*** these things in order to be saved: believe, repent and obey. Anyone’s faith if it is without works is dead and without faith one cannot please God and salvation is for only those who obey, which involves good works done through faith in God and for God. It really should all make sense, especially with God’s Word agreeing.
