Obedience is better than sacrifice...

OSAS sacrifices obedience and yet obedience is better than sacrifice.

If you doubt this claim as an OSASer then ask yourself, is obedience required of a believer to enter into eternal life with the Father? Then read the following scriptures to see if your assumption lines up with God’s word.

It is sad when the winds, sea and even unclean spirits obey Jesus yet OSAS assumes that obedience is not essential.

But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! Matthew 8:27

And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him. Mark 1:27

Since OSAS is a man-made extrabiblical doctrine it should not be obeyed. Instead we ought to obey God and His word. Prior to John Calvin any preserved state of the soul in this life was not taught or preached instead it was preached to the contrary. The early church was busy warning believers to not depart from the faith just as God’s word does.

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall 2 Peter 1:10

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. Hebrews 3:12-15

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men. Acts 5:29

The Holy Ghost comes only to those who obey God.

And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. Acts 5:32

You cannot obey God and sin at the same time. God shares His throne with nothing, especially sin.

What then? shall we sin, because we are not under the law, but under grace? God forbid. Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness? Romans 6:15-16

God’s wrath will come on all those, whether heathen or saved, who disobey Him. Pretending to be, or thinking that one is, saved is not a means of escape from God’s wrath and everlasting punishment.

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed ) in that day. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10

For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? 1 Peter 4:17

Obedience is always better than sacrifice in God’s economy.

And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. 1 Samuel 15:22

If you do not obey Jesus, you do not love Him and in no way does He count you as a friend. This has direct implications on one’s status in regards to salvation.

If ye love me, keep my commandments. John 14:15

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. John 15:14

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him. He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked. 1 John 2:3-6

Our obedience to Him demonstrates that we are His. If we are not in obedience to Him then we are not His children and this dictates that we are not saved.

By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God, and keep his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. 1 John 5:2-3

Only the obedient can be saved. This is not a one-time obedience and then anything goes but it is a lifetime of obedience such as what Jesus demonstrated for us with His life.

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Hebrews 5:9
