Original sin is inherited...

Some folks today believe that Adam and Eve did not actually die spiritually but only physically.

This is highlighted in a recent FB comment where someone said “Adam and Eve did die, but not spiritually”.

The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. Ezekiel 18:20

Adam and Eve sinned so at the moment of their sin their souls were indeed spiritually dead.

People are dead wrong (pun relevant) in believing that sin only results in physical death.

The soul is not physical but it is metaphysical and it certainly does die due to sin. While the soul and flesh are separate, they both die due to sin. Sin brought the world into a fallen state where death now exists but the effect of sin on the flesh is related to the soul sinning and not the flesh itself sinning.

Flesh alone does not sin as sin is committed by the soul through the flesh. The soul is not condemned by sin by the flesh alone as sin is committed not inherited. There is no sin gene only souls that sin and those are the ones that die.

So the Bible does not say we have a sinful nature but rather we are a new creature and all things are new. Romans chapter 7 fits perfectly in this as well contextually as it does not speak to the present state of man, that is, if he is a new creature. If it did then Paul would have been contradicting himself in regards to chapters 6 and 8 as well as the charge he gave to Timothy as to who qualifies as an elder...

Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. 2 Corinthians 5:17

The belief in the flesh being sinful is rooted in the popular status quo belief in regards to the doctrine of original sin which did not exist prior to Augustine. This is a fact we know from scripture as well as the writings we have from the church prior to Augustine. Augustine was a gnostic prior to his conversion and it is a gnostic teaching and not a Biblical teaching that the flesh is sinful. It’s the soul that sins that dies not the flesh but, as noted above and more importantly in scripture, the flesh does die due to the soul having sinned (sin entered the world through a soul sinning).

This needs to be emphasized again, sin is not inherited it is committed.

Original sin is a heretical lie that has been doctrinally inherited by the churches of today from Augustine but sin itself is never inherited. The irony is thick within the false teaching of today.

All of this begs the question…what is the difference between temptation and sin?
