A works based salvation is a salvation that produces works.
I can hear the yells now. Heretic! Sacrilege! Blasphemer!
Please read on in order to avoid jumping to the wrong conclusion which you may have already done so by reading into the title incorrectly.
Remember... He that answereth a matter before he heareth it , it is folly and shame unto him. Proverbs 18:13
Our salvation is definitely works based. It is based solely on the works of Jesus Christ which was finished on the cross some two thousand years ago.
But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work. John 5:17
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work. John 4:34
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee:
As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him.
And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. John 17:1-4
When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. John 19:30
We were created unto good works and once we are reconciled back to God by the finished work of Jesus Christ we should be walking in them. In other words, if a person is saved then his works would be the obvious outward sign that a dead man has been born again and now lives unto God.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:10
Simply put, without good works one's faith is dead. Do not be fooled that one can be saved because they simply believe in Jesus. The fact is, that person's faith is dead if that is all they have. If this is the case then they are just like the devils, destined to Hell. The devils also believe and even tremble...
Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.
Thou believest that there is one God; thou doest well: the devils also believe, and tremble.
But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead?
Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?
Seest thou how faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.
Ye see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.
Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?
For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also. James 2:17-26
When one is truly born again they are not troubled by someone such as Paul when they tell them that they have to "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling". Philippians 2:12
It's not that we 'have to' do anything.
It’s all about the joy in the fact that we 'get to' for the glory of God!
